Since 1992, Methodist Senior Services has grown an internal endowment as a way to generate interest income to provide security and quality of life for senior residents. That’s the year that Tupelo legend, Henry Brevard, recognized the value of investing in the ministry’s security and future and helped start the first MSS general endowment.
In 2023, MSS added new endowment funds that will allow donors to give directly to help senior residents at their local senior communities across Mississippi. The interest income can actually be used for anything the campus needs… it isn’t just for Sunday fund.
The new MSS endowment funds held at community foundations around the state are inspired by a new state tax credit program that offers an incentive to encourage individuals, businesses and organizations to make lasting investments in their local communities through charitable giving.
Starting in 2023, donors can receive a tax credit equal to 25 percent of their gifts from their Mississippi state taxes. Gifts must be a minimum of $1,000 and a maximum of $500,000, meaning donors can receive a tax credit up to $125,000 on their state taxes. The state-wide tax credit pool is capped at $1 million per year. It’s a win-win for donors, for senior residents and their families called Endow Mississippi.
These new community foundation endowments will help us reach new donors and also allow current donors to access and benefit from the Endow Mississippi tax credit.
Donors who want to benefit need to act promptly since a limited number of credits will be available annually on a first come, first served basis. Persons interested in donating to the new MSS endowment funds should visit the Endow Mississippi website.
At that site interested persons can download applications for tax credits and detailed descriptions of how the new tax credits work.
