About Us
From the Desk of the Executive Director
They come to us with different backgrounds, for different reasons, and with different expectations. Some come to us experiencing relief and anticipation, while others come with dread and fear. They have experienced the loss of a spouse or a debilitating disease. They might be depressed and lonely, looking for meaningful friendships. Many times they come with the intent of removing the guilt and responsibilities their children are experiencing. For whatever reason, they are leaving the security and privacy of their own homes, downsizing, selling or giving away many life-long possessions that hold precious memories. Life, as they know it, is literally ripped out from under them. They fear that they are no longer useful, that life holds no purpose.
Over and over they tell us their stories and express their gratitude for what we do. They tell us that they feel loved here. They say that they have developed friendships unlike any they have ever experienced. They tell us that they love their extended family and hope they never have to live anywhere else. They say that loneliness and depression are things of the past. They are happy that their children can relax and feel good that they are being well cared for.
They are able to maintain appropriate levels of independence. They look after one another. They become useful, and they make a difference. Many spend their time in healthful pursuits – exercise, spiritual teaching, getting to know other people. Some experience a sense of call, even as God called Abraham and Sarah as they left their home on a new journey of faith. Some think about the verse the Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 3:13 – “Forgetting what is behind and pushing toward what is ahead, I press on…”
They thank us for providing such a wonderful and loving environment. They thank us for our friendships and for our kindness. They are grateful when we go the extra mile. They sometimes look to us for answers and advice. They depend on us to give them the opportunities to be useful, productive individuals. They need us to take care of them, yet they need to be independent. It is sometimes a daunting task. We are not perfect, but we do the best we can because we love them so.
Even through our imperfections, they remain appreciative and loving. They feel lucky. They don’t know that we are the lucky ones. While doing our jobs and fulfilling our mission, we are the benefactors of their wisdom and the recipients of hundreds of hugs and kisses every single day.
And as for me, I pray daily that God has placed each staff member exactly where He meant for us to be. I pray for wisdom and patience. I pray that we can always accept each person as an individual, and that He will deliver us from impatience. I pray that we can listen and reach out. And I pray that we can love each person as God does, because that is what allows us to succeed in our mission.
Sincerely,
Marian Norwood,
Executive Director
