Wesley Meadows Residents Take An Ark Adventure

On Monday, October 9, 2018, twelve folks from Wesley Meadows Retirement Community headed out on an ARK ADVENTURE! The 7 residents, 2 staff members, 1 caregiver and 2 volunteers traveled all day by bus to Erlanger, Kentucky... located about 20 miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio. The group was led by Marsha Brasher (Executive Director) and Karen Hill (Activities Director). We survived rush hour traffic in Nashville and Louisville and proved to be quite the road warriors. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful scenery and curious sites along the way as Karen had to find a creative path around stopped interstate traffic!

On Tuesday, the group made their way to the Ark Encounter. To say everyone had a HUGE time, would be an understatement. The Ark Encounter is the largest timber-frame structure in the world, built from standing dead timber, in part by skilled Amish craftsmen. The Ark is an architectural and engineering wonder containing three decks of world-class exhibits. We learned a lot and saw some really great representations of what life must have been like for Noah. There were scores of teaching exhibits about the flood, Noah, and the animals that answered a lot of questions about the biblical account of Noah's Ark. Everyone went at their own pace and took in the exhibits, activities and shows that appealed most to them. Someone said we walked close to 2.5 miles just inside the museum!

After we left the ark, we took a quick bus tour of Cincinnati. It was interesting to see the unique architecture, well-known landmarks and all the hustle of a big city. It was great to explore Cincinnati, but we decided they could keep their heavy traffic though!

We topped off the day with a delicious meal at Red Lobster where lots of seriously funny stories were shared about the pranks Wesley Meadows residents and employees like to play on each other. You'd better watch out around there - they obviously love to play! After a long day of fun and laughter, we headed to the hotel for a good nights rest.

We started a little later in the day on Wednesday since we were a little tired from the day before, but everyone was eager to visit the Creation Museum. When they say Bible history comes to life at the Creation Museum, they aren't kidding. We explored creation science with excellent exhibits and movies, dinosaur bones and fossils, as well as a walk through the beautiful botanical gardens. Our journey through the idyllic Garden of Eden exhibit gave us a unique look at Adam and Eve. We saw Adam naming the animals, the creation of Eve, the tree of life, and the serpent cunningly coiled in the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Witnessing what these events must have looked like first-hand was very spiritual for all of us.

And if all that wasn't enough adventure for our trip, four travelers decided they wanted to zip-line! Ms. Betsy Perry and Ms. Laura Nagle thought it would be fun to do something they had never done before. So off they went to sail across the lake on just a wire and strap without batting an eye. They took Karen Hill and Angie Polk along for the ride. The ladies had so much fun and were loved by their zip-lining team. Videos and photos were taken as evidence for the family members and friends who might not believe they said yes to such a big adventure.

After a fun day of touring, the group took in a hearty lunch at Cracker Barrel where once again, the tales were tall and the laughs were long. The group retired to the hotel where they had pizza and burgers together and spent the night getting ready for the return trip. The trip home on Thursday was a bit quicker and much quieter as the weary travelers cat-napped most of the drive home.

The group got to share pictures and stories of their Ark Adventure with the other residents at Wesley Meadows on November 16th. All agreed it was a wonderful trip and they are already scouting locations for their next adventure!
