Traceway Resident Honored at MSU Football Game

Bill Webb, a resident at Traceway Manor in Tupelo, was among veterans honored at Mississippi State University's annual Veterans Recognition Game in November. Webb, a native of Cottage Grove, TN, is a veteran of WWII, having served in the European front from 1943-45 in the 554th Bomb Squad. After the war, he attended the University of Tennessee-Martin for 2 years on the GI bill, and lettered in football and basketball. He was recruited by Dudy Noble to continue his football career at Mississippi State. While at MSU, he was a member of the football and track teams in 1948 and 1949. Webb said he isn't in any MSU football team pictures because, "I was the only one married and was always in a hurry to head home." He and his late wife, Tommye, graduated from MSU in 1950, where it is said they were the first married couple to graduate from MSU in the same year. Webb's career included athletic director, head baseball coach, and assistant football coach at McNairy Central High School in Selmer, TN, and then later served as City Judge.
